„Data is the new oil." This sentence has been repeated for over ten years — and nobody asks what it means. If data is oil, people are oil wells. You are drilled. You are refined. You are sold. That is not innovation. That is exploitation with better PR.

What a crooked language hides

The language of exploitation

„Collect user data", „track behaviour", „optimise engagement", „monetise reach" — the language of the platform economy hides a simple act: someone takes something from you that you did not give and sells it to someone you do not know. When you say it like that, it sounds like what it is.

We do not use this language. We do not collect, we do not track, we do not optimise engagement, we do not monetise reach. That is not competitive abstinence — it is architectural abstinence. Whoever does not build it cannot sell it.

Behavioural surplus as expropriated resource

Zuboff (Harvard Business School, emerita) coined the term surveillance capitalism. Her finding: what platforms call „data" is in truth behavioural surplus — traces of human action that are expropriated, turned into prediction products and sold on futures markets for human behaviour. That is not data business. It is business with human predictability, and it attacks the core of what human freedom even means.

Commodity form and dignity

Marx describes what happens when something becomes a commodity: it acquires an exchange value that displaces its use value. When a human being is turned into a commodity through her data shadow, the same thing happens — her use value (her personhood) recedes behind her exchange value (her advertising target, her behavioural prediction). That is the older name for exploitation. The mechanism is not new — only the material is.

„If you are not paying for it, you're the product"

Original wording (Lewis 2010): „If you are not paying for it, you're not the customer; you're the product being sold." A simple, precise observation — originally written as a forum comment about the Digg redesign, since then the standard formula of platform critique.

The thought is older still: Serra & Schoolman already wrote, verbatim, in their 1973 video work „Television Delivers People": „Television delivers people to an advertiser. […] You are the product of TV. You are delivered to the advertiser who is the customer. He consumes you." 37 years before Lewis's tweet, three decades before social media — the same mechanism.

If something is „free", it is not free — you pay with your data. This payment is not voluntary in the classical sense, because it is not negotiable, not revocable and the price is nowhere displayed. It is an exchange without a price tag — and therefore not a free exchange.
